In the Unstructured Apartment Program, the youth are expected to rely heavily on their independent living skills while experiencing maximum freedom and responsibility. The Apartment Program Coordinator maintains contact with the youth and offers emotional support, as well as problem-solving and supervision. Typically these youth meet with the Apartment Program Coordinator 1-2 times per week.
While in this phase, as with the Structured Apartment, the youth are expected to find and maintain employment. While Footsteps will pay all costs associated with the apartment (eg., food, rent, utilities, phone, etc.), the youth are expected to allocate a portion of their income to pay “rent.” Additionally the youth are encouraged/required to begin to allocate most “living” expenses into their restricted savings account. This restricted savings account is for the youth to access in the event of an emergency, or upon release from the program.
